Political activities across the country have picked pace after the Supreme Court directives to ensure the conduct of general elections on February 8.
Just like the rest of parties, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is also making efforts to ensure its success in elections. In this regard, the party has awarded a ticket to Amanullah Warraich for PP-70 Wazirabad, Gujranwala division. The candidate is the father of Umar Farooq, who is the deputy commissioner of the district, putting a question mark on the credibility of elections amid allegations levelled by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of not being provided level-playing field.
Sources said that Umar Farooq was posted as DC around 45 days before. They added that his appointment was aided by PML-N leader Atta Tarar. Political pundits are of the view that it is not the stand alone example where the credibility of elections has come under question, which is not a healthy sign for democracy to thrive. They said that such precedents would cast doubt on the impartiality of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
According to sources, the ECP has not even transferred officials appointed by the previous government of the PDM. Punjab IG Dr Usman, Lahore Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider, Islamabad IG Akbar Nasir Khan and Islamabad DC Irfan Nawaz Memon were all appointed by the previous set-up. The PTI along with other parties have objected to such appointments, which according to them can hinder the conduct of free and fair elections.
