LAHORE: Provisional, unofficial results from Senate elections on Saturday have seen Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) backed independent candidates dominate Punjab, while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has also scored a decisive majority in Sindh.
Punjab
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) backed candidates have managed to secure eleven seats from Punjab in the Senate elections on Saturday.
According to reports, stern competition between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Muhammad Sarwar and PML-N backed Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan was seen after which the PTI leader stood victorious.
After Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision to oust Nawaz Sharif as PML-N president, while also disqualifying the party from Senate elections, 23 PML-N leaders are contesting Saturday’s Senate elections as independent candidates.
Former finance minister Ishaq Dar secured Senate technocrat seat from Punjab, while other victorious PML-N backed candidates include Dr Asif Kirmani, Nuzhat Sadiq, Saadia Abbasi, Haroon Khan and Shaheen Khalid Butt.
Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT)
PML-N backed candidates Mushahid Hussain Syed and Asad Junejo have secured both seats from Islamabad.
Sindh
Pakistan Peoples Party, on the other hand, also secured 11 out of 12 Senate seats from Sindh, while MQM failed to bag even a single seat.
From the party, Raza Rabbani, Maula Buksh Chandio, Mohammadd Ali Shah Jamot, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Dr Sikander Mengro and Rukhsana Zuberi secured technocrat seats while Anwar Lal Dean won the seat reserved for the minorities.
For the seats reserved for women, Quratulain Marri and Krishna Kohli managed to win.
Balochistan
Vote counting for Balochistan Senate results is still underway. According to the unofficial results thus far, 7 independent candidates have secured seats from the province.
Jamat Ulama-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) and PML-N backed candidate shared one seat each, while ANP managed to win two seats in the province.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
Provisional results from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lead Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province show that the KP ruling party is in the lead.
PTI has managed to secure 5 seats, PML-N backed independent candidates and PPP have bagged 2 seats, while JUI-F and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have scored one each.
FATA
All four seats from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) have been secured by independent candidates.
